The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana launched to empower subtle and small entrepreneurs has completed 10 years today. During this period, more than 50 crore loans have been given under this scheme. But in the last 8 years, the number of loans taking the last financial year was the lowest. Under the Mudra scheme, a loan of up to Rs 20 lakh is given without any bail.
How many more loans did you get from Mudra Yojana in the last 10 years?
Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on the occasion of the completion of 10 years of Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), “The purpose of the Mudra Yojana is to empower hardworking micro enterprises and first generation entrepreneurs. Through this scheme, those small enterprises were provided loans without any bail, which faced challenges in taking formal institutional loans.” In the last 10 years, more than 52.37 crore currency loans have been given under this scheme. A total loan of Rs 33.65 lakh crore has been given to those taking money loans till 21 March 2025.
Women get the highest loan in Mudra Yojana
The highest loan under the Mudra scheme is being taken by women. According to government data, women account for around 70 per cent of the total currency loans, while men account for 30 per cent. The average loan taken by women has increased 160 per cent during the last 10 years. SC, ST and OBC had half a stake in the total currency loan.
What is the currency scheme and its characteristics?
The purpose of the Mudra scheme is to empower such subtle and small entrepreneurs, whose formal institutional lenders do not have access. Under the Mudra scheme, loans are being given in 4 categories ‘Shishu’, ‘Kishore’, ‘Tarun’ and recently newly added category ‘Tarun Plus’ category. Under the infant category, loans of Rs 50,000 are provided under teenage to Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh, under Tarun from Rs 5 to 10 lakh and under Tarun Plus Rs 10 to 20 lakhs.
The highest loans of up to 50 thousand rupees were taken
Mudra Yojana is becoming very beneficial for micro entrepreneurs as the maximum loans have been given in the infant category under the scheme during the last 10 years. In the total loans, the number of loans up to the infant category i.e. 50 thousand rupees was 78 percent. After this, 20 percent stake was for the teenagers i.e. the loans of Rs 50,000 to 5 lakh rupees. Among the total sanctioned loans, the share of infant category was 35 per cent, 40 per cent of the teenager and 25 per cent of the Tarun category.
Number of loans in the year 2024-25 is the lowest in the last 8 years
The Mudra Yojana may have achieved great success during the last 10 years. But last financial year, the number of beneficiaries of this scheme has decreased. In the year 2024-25, the number of sanctioned loans was recorded at 4.53 crore till 21 March 2025, which is the lowest since 2017-18. Their number was 4.81 crore in the year 2017-18. The year 2024-25 has recorded a big fall in the number of sanctioned loans compared to the year 2023-24. In 2023-24, the number of sanctioned loans was the highest 6.67 crore, which declined to 4.53 crore in 2024-25. In the year 2024-25, the sanctioned amount of loans was reduced to Rs 4.77 crore as compared to an amount of Rs 5.41 lakh crore before the year.
