The total insurance cover of Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcaster, OTT platform and franchisee declined a tremendous decline this year compared to last year. The reason for this is the merger of broadcast units and a tremendous bounce in the premium for franchise.
The total insurance cover of the IPL in the year 2024 was Rs 10,000 crore. In this, Broadcasters, organizers, franchisees and sponsors took a total insurance of Rs 6,000 crore. In this, broadcasters took insurance of Rs 3,500 crore for their TV revenue while the remaining insurance cover was taken by others. This time the IPL started on 22 March and will conclude on 25 May.
Some franchisees are in a state of confusion about taking insurance due to excessive bounce in premiums. According to experts, the insurance amount has decreased by about Rs 1,500 crore in this session as compared to last year. However, according to him, you can also take insurance during franchisees or broadcaster matches. Franchisee can take insurance even when their match date comes close.
According to Hourden India CEO Amit Aggarwal, ‘Insurance cover is expected to decrease this year as compared to the previous sessions. The reason for this is that some large broadcasting units merged, acquired. Apart from this, there has been a tremendous bounce in the premium of the franchise.
Last year, Star Sports strengthened on TV and Vicom 18 through Jio Cinema. In November 2024, Reliance -led Vycom 18 and Stor India together formed a joint undertaking Geostar. Geostar is broadcast IPL 2025.
An insurance broker said, ‘In the last session, the IPL had a bet of Rs 10,000 crore and out of it, about Rs 6,000 crore was insured. In this sequence, the insurance cover was taken by broadcaster, organizers, franchisees and sponsors. TV broadcasters have not taken insurance cover in this session. So this time the actual insurance amount has reduced considerably. ‘Giostar has refused to comment about this.
